Not because they are going away, but because they are FINALLY being rebuilt!
I have been putting this project off for months because I knew how much of the bike I was going to have to disassemble to get the fucking things out...
first: get the greasy Haynes manual off the book shelf and use a watering can as an impromptu table... pre-read of the process looks simple enough...
1) remove the silencer
1b) get the big fucking impact wrench and a 1/2” to 3/8” adapter so you can get those goddamn super-stuck 10mm bolts off... the little guy wouldn't budge them...
2) remove the fuel tank cover, (the front faring will fall off when you do this, so it comes off too...) the fuel tank and the radiator shrouds...
2b) bungie the faring back on so you don’t have to disconnect all the wiring or find some place to put it...
2c) put the fuel tank down and plan to drain the very old gas in it into the law mower at some later time... (end up stuffing a rag in the opening and stacking it aside for now)
3) remove the side covers, remove the battery, “displace” the coolant lines to the overflow tank, remove the emissions control hoses and bolts and slide the air box out the right side of the chassis...
4) No.
5) The fucking airbox doesn’t actually come OUT of the chassis unless you disassemble it.. FUCK THIS SHIT. Just leave it hanging out like a hernia.
6) disconnect the throttle cable, choke control and evap lines from the carbs and slide them out to the rear...
6a) swear a lot
6b) squint and poke with very small tools...
7) success! Carbs in hand!
8) admire your handywork...
8b) pack up all the fasteners and small bits in tupperware and the like so they don’t go a-wandering... stuff all the holes with paper towels, put the seat in a garbage bag so the mice don’t eat it.
8c) yank on the air box a couple more times just to make sure its not coming out... nope, that sucker’s not going anywhere unless you split it....
9) rebuild carbs at your leisure in the basement, while trying not to think about how much of a pain in the ass its going to be to put all that back together again...
9b) Try to remember how much you LOVE riding...

You forgot a step. The one where you scrape and or slice your hands on random sharp edges and bleed all over everything.
Or is that just me? It’s probably just me..

At first I thought this was going to be a post about diet.

I don’t do motorcycles, but that happens to me all the time. It’s not just you. “Ah! What the hell did I just cut myself on?” is a very frequent sentence.

the 1997 BMW F650 Funduro is remarkably free of random sharp edges and hidden pointy bits...

I wish service manuals were actually written like this. They would be more accurater.
